Product Description
Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portableGPS navigators with its nüvi 755T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio--including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks--from the device to your car radio.New to the nüvi 7x5 lineup is Garmin's HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 755T includes free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver. The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

4 out of 5 stars First GPS   August 31, 2010
AUGUST MILLER (SCOTTSDALE, AZ United States)
This was my first GPS and I have nothing to compare it to. It powered up quickly and appears to do everything it is supposed to. I've used it in Montana, Wyoming and Kentucky as well as my home state of AZ. I'll use it in CA this coming week and will see if the Traffic router works. I had difficulty trying to pre-program destinations in other states ahead of time and just gave up and waited until I got there.

2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment after my Nuvi 350   August 30, 2010
James H. Manning (Washington, DC)
I bought the Garmin nüvi 755 as a replacement for my 3 year old Garmin nüvi 350, which I had loved. I had hoped to take advantage of new features in the 755, including traffic updates and an updated map.

Unfortunately, this unit suffers from a couple of flaws that make it much less satisfactory to use than my previous nüvi 350. For one thing, the screen seems slow to respond to touch, and no matter how careful I am, it's easy to mistype information. So, I find myself constantly having to hit the "erase" key to re-enter addresses.

The other issue is that the traffic update feature is pretty useless. It seems to be unaware of major traffic jams in the Washington, DC area. When traffic is normal, it seems wildly optimistic of travel times, constantly adding minutes to the expected arrival time - even when I am able to drive the entire trip at posted speeds.

The first unit I bought died after a few days (bad battery), so I exchanged it. Unfortunately, the second unit had the same issues with the touch screen and traffic updates, and only marginally better battery life.

Traffic routing seems accurate and decent. Unfortunately, because of the difficult to use touch screen and inaccurate travel times/traffic updates, I hesitate to recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading Guarantee   August 30, 2010
Peter
I purchased the device in May of 2010. One of the main factors in deciding to purchase the 755 was the guarantee of a new map update within 60-days of first using the device in a vehicle. I planned on using the device for a complicated trip in the fall. After I received the device I charged it using the USB connection on my computer and updated the non-map software using WebUpdater. I periodically charged the device in succeeding months, always in my home. I note that the device acquired a satellite despite the fact I never used the antenna and never used it in my car. Finally in late August I used the device for a short trip in my car. The next day I registered the device and applied for the NuMap guarantee; I was clearly within the 60-days of first using the device in a vehicle. After several back-and-forths with Garmin support, I was told I was not eligible because I had acquired a satellite in May even though I was not even trying to acquire a satellite. The language I relied on, "in the vehicle", is meaningless, so buyer beware. I am not happy about Garmin company ethics, especially considering the language of the guarantee and the little effort it would have taken to fulfill the original offer. Kudos to the engineers who designed the device and its software, but bad cess to the people who run marketing. In short, if you buy a Garmin device with the NuMap guarantee, be sure to download the the free map software within 60 days of purchasing the device; do not rely on the plain language of the offer, as I did.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool for trips   August 27, 2010
m h
I've only used my GPS once so far on an end of summer trip to Tahoe & Lake Donner. Getting it setup was easy enough but took several hours to download and update it with the current firmware and maps.

It was great for finding places we wanted to go, restaurants, bike shops, our condo, a friends house. It was easy to use and can make driving more fun. The data is not always up to date for points of interest. I suggest calling to verify the address as the GPS may not have the latest info. A bike shop I was looking for had recently moved. I found the shops info using the POI but the address was out of date. I was able to locate the shop using the GPS but had to enter their new address manually. On one occasion, I entered the address of a hotel manually but the GPS couldn't locate it - instead directing us to a location down the street from where we wanted to go. It did find the hotel with the correct location when looking it up using the POI. The 2 addresses, the one I entered and the one from the POI database were exactly the same. I thought it might been pilot error but I verified the address I entered several times. After that, I always used the POI when I could.

I definitely wish I had this for previous trips and won't take any without it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this GPS   August 27, 2010
Ray (Bay Area, Ca)

Prior to this I used a Garmin 650 for several years. Thinking I was due for an upgrade I got lured into all the new bells and whistles this device had. Now that I've been using it for a while I've concluded that it wasn't worth it. Here are my top 4 issues.

- It's very unresponsive especially upon start up. The UI lags and button presses don't always register immediately. This is by far the single most frustrating issues.

- Inaccurate touch screen. I've calibrated this thing a bunch of times without success. Combined with the unresponsiveness this exasperates the lag issues with the user interface.

- Traffic is only somewhat useful. While the traffic is accurate, it takes some time for the data to come in and more often than not, I end up experiencing the traffic before getting alerted by the GPS so I can avoid it.

- The ads. I can't help but think this is the cause of the lag. It's not a deal breaker but I would much rather disable features so I don't get the ads or even pay a fee.

All in all, it was a somewhat expensive lesson to come to the conclusion that a no-frills responsive GPS is all I really need.
